Dealing and Bidding
What should you expect when you attend an auction? There are a
few rules that you should know before you start bidding on the
antique of your dreams. After you get feel for the rules and watch a
few minutes at the auction that you are attending, you will be on
your way to bringing home an antique at a great price.
Hello again! You have already gotten a bidding number, reserved a seat, and
noted the buyer's premium. Are you ready for more?
Alrighty. You have your bidding number, your seat, and
your notepad filled with lot numbers, descriptions of antiques and collectibles,
and maximum bid amounts. Take your seat and get ready for the show!
A great way to get a good deal on antiques and
collectibles is to attend an Antique Show. These events, running
from two days up to a week, bring in not only local dealers, but
dealers from other cities, and in some cases, from across the nation
and internationally.
Getting a good price on an antique or
collectible piece takes time and dedication. There are good
prices out there. You just have to find them. To a certain
degree, the amount of money that you will save depends on the
amount of time and energy that you are willing to put into your
search. After all, the hunt is part of the fun, right?
I am often asked at antique shows if I am interested in buying someone’s antique
collection. I say, “Yes,” of course. I always have huge reservations,
particularly if the collection is part of an inheritance. Here are some ideas to
consider if you are considering selling to a dealer.
Keith,
my husband, and I decided last year to rent a display case at a local antique
store. We have some fragile and expensive items that we don't
want to carry around with us to the various venues at which we show.
