What is Art Nouveau? Those involved in the Art
Nouveau, or “new art” movement, wanted to wrench art away from its classical
forms and create a new type of outlook on art in its various formats. The
movement lasted in Europe and North America
from roughly the 1880's until World War I.
Art Deco grew
as a rebellion against the Art Nouveau movement. While the Art Nouveau style was
curvilinear and reflected organic, living things such as flowers and leaves, the
Art Deco style was more geometric and angular. This is not to say that the
Art Deco style was completely linear. It was not. But, whatever
curves that an Art Deco piece had were complemented by linear and angular
forms.
