I once was told that when you want to begin a project you should always start small or, put another way, “start with peanuts.” This “peanuts” mentality applies to everything from losing weight to saving money to building a home-based business. It can also be used in the case of making changes around your apartment. Small changes can often make a huge difference because subtle things get noticed. Sometimes the smallest alterations make the biggest difference. This is good news for those who live on a shoestring budget but strive to have a beautiful, well kept home. Let’s take a look at some small changes that can make quite an impact.

Do one room at a time
Is your bathroom screaming for a coat of paint, a new shower curtain or a new floor mat? Or does your kitchen need something new, such as a tablecloth or some new curtains or a splash of color anywhere in the room? Decide which room in your apartment needs the most help and then work on that room first. Be systematic when it comes to your “peanut” changes and only do one room at a time, instead of jumping from one room to another. You don’t want to send your apartment or your nervous system into a confused frenzy!

Second-hand shops and vintage stores
Remember when the thought of visiting a second-hand store filled you with a sense of dread? You were humiliated at the thought that someone you knew might see you and then you might as well have the word “poor” written across your forehead? Well no more. There is no reason to feel shame at entering a vintage or second-hand shop today. In fact these stores have gained tremendously in popularity over the last few years and are becoming very stylish indeed. The best thing about second-hand shops is you just never know what you might find! Consider taking a peek at some of the merchandise in your local vintage shops. You might find a new chair, a lamp, some cushion covers and who knows what else! I found a beautiful throw rug from China in one shop and I proudly have it displayed under my coffee table in my living room. It has been a conversation piece since I first brought it home!
