Arrow arum is first alphabetically in our list of marginal or bog
plants, so that is where we will start our plant palette. There are so
many pond plants for our ponds that it's hard to pick just a few. We all
need submerged grasses to keep our goldfish ponds clean and healthy,
floating plants to keep them shaded and cool in the summer and then we
have dozens of bog plants or marginals to choose from.
Backyard Pond pumps do one thing: They move the water in your pond
from where it is to somewhere else. Most of the time they pump it up and
over a waterfall. Other times they pump water through a spitter, an
ornament in or next to your pond, often a frog, dolphin, fish or piece
of statuary. Sometimes they pump water up in the air like you see in
huge commercial ponds near the mall or on the farm.
The Complete Book of the Water Garden, by Philip Swindells and David
Mason is arguably the finest, most comprehensive water gardening book
ever written. It begins with the history of water features in the
garden, telling of the persistent theme of water in the garden since the
early days of civilizations in Egypt and Mesopotamia.
The Curious Gardener's Almanac, centuries of practical garden wisdom,
by Niall Edworthy, published by The Penguin Group in New York is not a
book about ponds. In fact, it is not a book about gardens either. This
book has no pigeon hole in which to be pushed. Curious gardeners will
love this compendium of over 10,000 tips, tidbits, facts, quotes,
recipes, customs, quotes and general ephemera contained in this
delightful little volume.
Miracle-Gro has produced one fine pond help book. The very best part
of it is that it is spiral bound, so it will lie flat, and waterproof so
you can take it outside with you, put it on the ground for reference and
clean it up later. You can make notes in it with a Sharpie pen without
worry.
Building a bog garden is a great way to conserve water and add
another element to your garden, another room, if you will.
If you decorate your house, you probably decorate your yard. If you

in the winter as well as the summer with a few simple ideas. So let's
make your pond a focal point during the holidays just as it is the rest
of the year.
