Talk about a snappy dresser, the nuthatches bring glamour to a bird feeder with their little band uniforms. Glossy black crown stripe and nape and a blue gray jacket with white belly, neck, and face with black and white lines of trim, makes him a pretty bird. He is stocky with a short tail, a strong sharp bill, and black eyes.

One of the most beloved birds of North America, the Northern Cardinal, is such a common bird even children seem to recognize him. “There’s a Cardinal, Grandma!” shouts a two-year-old.

Birds on the Telephone Wire

It is cold outside today. When I woke this morning, I saw three little black birds sitting in a row on the telephone wire that crosses my front yard. Their backs were toward me and they sat still and fluffed out against the cold. If birds can hunch their shoulders, I would say they were hunched.


Birds on Ice

Last week strolling through a small secondhand shop, I noticed a photograph of three lemony yellow flowers with ice encasing the petals and stems. It was entitled Daffodils on Ice. The frosted heads were bowed with a heavy load on a cold, but sun-filled morning. They shone and reflected light like a sparkling cut glass pitcher of cold lemonade.
