Sand, sun, surf—it’s fun at the beach, and even more fun in a kid’s
bedroom. Here are several projects and ideas to help you turn your kid’s
blah bedroom into a beautiful beach retreat.
Bed
Create the perfect spot for your child to rest after a day in the sun
by placing a beach umbrella over her bed. Then, up the fun-factor by
creating pillowcases out of terry cloth (towel material). You can use
actual beach towels for a bold, colorful look; or use solid colored bath
towels, if you’re trying to stick to a specific palette. Either way,
just stitch up cases to fit the pillows, and the look is complete.
Want to get your child in on the fun? Here’s a project that they can
do:
No-Sew Towel Pillow
What You’ll Need:
- Towels
- Throw pillows
- Ribbon
- Scissors
Directions:
Cut the towels down, so that you are left with a piece of
fabric that’s 4-inches larger than the pillow all the way around.
(You’ll need two pieces of terry per pillow.)
Then, lay one of the pieces of terry out on your work
surface, and lay the pillow on top of it.
Place the other piece of terry on top of the pillow.
Gather the fabric at the corners, and secure each one with a
piece of ribbon. Your pillow is now complete!
Walls
Blue skies, sun and sand—they look great at the beach, and they’ll
look great on your kid’s walls. Here’s how to create a no-fail mural to
set off your beach theme:
What You’ll Need:
- Sky blue paint
- Sand colored paint
- White paint
- A paint roller
- A paint brush
Directions:
Paint the walls blue, and allow them to dry.
Then, add clouds around the room. A balled up rag is the perfect
tool for this.
Add in sand dunes along the bottom of the wall, and your mural is
complete.
Floor
Rugs shaped like starfish, surfboards and sandcastles are the perfect
addition to a beach room, but you’ll pay dearly for them at the store,
so skip the sticker shock; and make your own from carpet remnants.
Here’s how:
Custom Beach Rugs
What You’ll Need:
- Carpet remnants in your chosen colors
- Scissors
- A marker
Directions:
Find a carpet dealer in your area who’s willing to sell you
scraps. Then, pick out a few pieces for your project (pink for starfish,
sand color for a sand castle, etc.).
Draw your first design on the back of your first piece of carpet.
Cut it out with a pair of scissors, and your rug is
complete—simple as that!
Repeat for your remaining designs.
Note: If you’d like your rug to look a bit more finished, check to
see if a carpet dealer can bind the edges for you. Many stores do this
for a nominal fee.
Lighting
No need to spend money on a new lamp. You can give your old lamp a
beach-worthy makeover in minutes. Here’s how:
Create a Shell Lamp
What You’ll Need:
- A lampshade
- Small shells
- A grass skirt
- Glue gun or tacky glue
Directions:
Cut the top inch off of a grass skirt, and glue it around the
bottom edge of your lampshade.
Then, glue shells all over the shade.
Allow your creation to dry, and it’s ready for use.
Seating
A surfboard bench is the perfect place for your child to “hang ten.”
Scour second-hand stores and yard sales for a used surfboard; then,
screw legs onto the back of the board for an instant bench. (No need to
make your own legs; most home improvement store’s sell them ready-made.)
Can’t find an affordable surfboard? Then, draw a surfboard-shape onto
a piece of wood, and cut it out. After a paint job it will look just as
nice.
Curtains
White curtains really work well with beach décor, but lack the whimsy
that you’d expect in a kids room. The solution: white curtains stamped
with beach prints and handmade by your child. Here’s how:
Beach Stamped Curtains
What You Will Need:
- White curtains
- Beach-themed foam stamps (crabs, shells, pail and shovel, etc.)
- Fabric paint
Directions:
Lay the curtains out on your work surface with cardboard
underneath.
Apply fabric paint to the stamps, and use them to stamp designs
all over the curtains.
Allow your creation to dry. Then, hang.
Note: For even more fun, use shell bracelets as curtain ties.
Storage
Fish nets are the perfect addition to a beach-themed bedroom, and
better yet--the perfect way to organize your child’s stuffed animals.
Just tack one up in a corner, and you’ve got a hammock for all of those
lovies.
Artwork Display
String up a second fish net on a wall, and use it to display your
child’s artwork. A handful of clothespins will hold her creations in
place.
