Teaching your dog to sit is the single most important obedience
command. It improves his overall obedience and control. Automatic sits
are the foundation of advanced obedience work, whether you want a
competition dog or a well mannered pet. And most dogs will learn this in
five minutes.

The Christmas holidays are upon us, and doesn't the family dog need
something under the tree? Of course you can spend a mint at pet stores
on everything from gift baskets for pets to gourmet dog treats and breed
specific gifts. Or you can make your own unique dog gifts. What do they
enjoy most?
You might think that because your dog has a winter coat he can stay
out in cold weather without any danger. Be careful! There are many
dangers to dogs in the winter snow and cold and not all of them are
temperature related. Here's what you need to know about keeping your dog
safe in winter.
The tainted pet food debacle at least led many people to think more
carefully about their choices in dog food. For many, this meant learning
to read labels and switching to better kibbles. Some people cook for
their dogs. Many more people have switched to raw feeding aka "BARF" or Bones And Raw Food. It's what I feed and it is not necessarily complicated or expensive.
Guests come to your house and your dog crouches and piddles on the
floor. Or you are annoyed when your dog misbehaves and as you raise your
voice, your dog rolls on her back and urinates. Perhaps you come home
and as you greet your dog at the door, she dribbles.
Agility is FUN and mixed breed dogs as well as purebreds can compete.
Of course any dog, of any size can attend agility classes as long as
they have some basic manners and training. Agility training is great for
children and dogs, too. I know many kids who train and compete as
agility junior handlers with the family dog.
You often read advice that in order to be more confident, friendly
and calm as adults, new puppies should be socialized. This means more
than just the occasional trip to the pet store and playing with the
kids.
Your dog should WANT to come when called because it is rewarding and
satisfying for him. Most dogs will come when there's no distractions,
especially if you are in the kitchen and they think food might be
involved. However you probably want your dog to come to you no matter
what.
