Dog Care - All Articles By Date
I look at crate training like plopping a child in front of a
television - it is an excellent tool but easy to misuse. A dog will
learn nothing about proper behavior, being social or how to toilet train
when in her crate.

Even your All-American mixed breed dog is eligible for the AKC Canine Good
Citizen (CGC) award. It's not just for purebreds! The test is in ten parts and
evaluates your dog's behavior in public. Here is the
AKC
explanation of the CGC program.

There's many reasons dogs like to jump up on people - they want (and
often get) attention from jumping. Dogs greet each other by smelling
each other's faces. Puppies get food and attention from licking the
muzzles of adult dogs.

Everyone wants a puppy. They're cute and adorable and playful and you can watch
them grow up. But guess what - a puppy is only cute for a little while. It
quickly turns into (da DUM da DUM da DUM insert "Jaws" music here) a
teenager!

Many breeds of dogs were developed to work, and unless you have sheep to herd or
acres of squirrels to hunt, your dog could probably use a little extra "work" to
do!

Every pet store has an entire aisle of dog treats, and given that about half
this nation's pets are overweight I am not sure that's really necessary. Most
packages tout various meats - real bacon flavor! Sizzling steak! Wholesome
chicken! Moist liver! See a trend here? Meat. Check the labels to see how much
meat the treat actually contains.

When
raising a puppy, it is really important he learn not to bite or nip
people, even in play. Puppies do this naturally and have to be taught
not to. Puppies learn early "bite inhibition" from their littermates and adult dogs by being
told in no uncertain terms when the biting is inappropriate. This is one reason
puppies are best left with mama and littermates until at least 8 weeks old.

Puppies bite. They bite because it's fun, it's a natural way for
puppies to play and it's one of several ways a baby dog explores her
world. If you have one that doesn't bite, I'd worry because this isn't
normal!

While the canine mind is much less complex than ours, dogs can certainly think
things through, problem solve, and with experience, gain understanding of their
world. Here's how some of my dogs have shown some really creative thought
processes!

Sure
a dog comes when called when it's in his interest. That's only natural!
If you're calling him to go for a walk, or get dinner or a treat – of
course he'll be all ears. If he's busy baying up a tree at a squirrel or
you're trying to get him to mind you on a leash when he's interested in
the dog across the street – you're a murmur in the background.
