Crate Training Your Dog

I look at crate training like plopping a child in front of a television - it is an excellent tool but easy to misuse. A dog will learn nothing about proper behavior, being social or how to toilet train when in her crate.

Is Your Dog a Canine Good Citizen?

Even your All-American mixed breed dog is eligible for the AKC Canine Good Citizen (CGC) award. It's not just for purebreds! The test is in ten parts and evaluates your dog's behavior in public. Here is the AKC explanation of the CGC program.

Teach Your Dog Not to Jump Up

There's many reasons dogs like to jump up on people - they want (and often get) attention from jumping. Dogs greet each other by smelling each other's faces. Puppies get food and attention from licking the muzzles of adult dogs.

Adopting an Older or Adult Dog.

Everyone wants a puppy. They're cute and adorable and playful and you can watch them grow up. But guess what - a puppy is only cute for a little while. It quickly turns into (da DUM da DUM da DUM insert "Jaws" music here) a teenager!

Canine Creative Thinking

While the canine mind is much less complex than ours, dogs can certainly think things through, problem solve, and with experience, gain understanding of their world. Here's how some of my dogs have shown some really creative thought processes!

Getting Your Dog To Listen and Pay Attention

If he's busy baying up a tree at a squirrel or you're trying to get him to mind you on a leash when he's interested in the dog across the street – you're a murmur in the background.
