Well trained and socialized dogs rarely end up in the shelter. In
most cases, behavior problems can be fixed quite easily. As the saying
goes, if your dog misbehaves, roll up a newspaper and hit yourself on
the head with it, because you trained the dog wrong! We expect the
family dog to understand what we want from him. Learning to understand
the dog is only fair play, and makes it much easier to train
effectively. A well behaved, well cared for dog is a joy to live with.
Carina's Bio
Carina MacDonald has had a special bond with the animal kingdom since
she was a toddler and discovered stepping barefoot in sun warmed cow
plops felt nice squishing between her toes. To her mother's dismay, she
brought bugs and lizards and worms home. She would give them names and
keep them in her bedroom. This behavior stopped when her mother relented
and let her have a dog.
Carina started reading dog training books at age ten and still has a
first edition 1970 copy of Barbara Woodhouse's Dog Training My Way.
She trains dogs for obedience and agility and today is an agility
addict, spending as many weekends as possible competing in agility
trials.
Physical health is as important as mental health for dogs as well as
people, and Carina started studying nutrition and health, which led to
her book Raw Dog Food which won the Dog Writers of America "Best
book under 100 pages" award for 2003. She owns a dog health and
nutrition yahoogroup called RAW-lite. Her current dogs are two very
charming Rottweilers (and their cat Elvis, who is really just a little
Rottweiler in a cat suit.) She volunteers at the local Humane Society
and wishes she had ten acres, a huge house and didn't have to work for a
living so she could have lots and lots more dogs!
