Affordable Vacations-

On the hunt for a cheap vacation package? That perfect, exotic vacation minus the exotic price? Stop searching for a mythical beast, and start making your vacation a reality. With a little creative planning you can get the vacation you want, without going over budget. Here are a few simple strategies to consider:

-Start planning early. Decide where you want to go, and then become familiar with the area. Visit the local chamber of commerce site to find out about upcoming events (many of which may be free) and to learn about area businesses and their offerings. You may even find links to the websites of local hotels and restaurants—all of which can be important to assessing the true cost of the trip. If you are flexible with your travel date, also check for off peak deals.

--Network. Let your friends and family know you are planning a vacation, and you may just stumble upon a real bargain. Perhaps they’ll know of a private hideaway with cheap rates, friends who’ve purchased a vacation package that they can’t use or even a vacation home owner who’d gladly exchange a free week of lodging for a bit of maintenance on their property. Just put the word out, and you may be surprised by the offers that come your way.

--Negotiate. Don’t ever settle for published prices. Call hotels before booking, and ask what unpublished rates they have available. You may find that they offer better rates for AAA members, senior citizens or even just for booking your reservations online. If you’re traveling with a large group, you may even be able to negotiate a group rate for hotel stays, attraction tickets, travel fare and meals.

--Look for extras. As you contemplate your travel options, compare choices carefully; and go for the deals that offer you the most. For example, you would be wise to choose the hotel that offers free breakfast over the one that doesn’t or the restaurant that offers a free appetizer with the purchase of two entrees. These may seem like minor things, but it is often the details that make a trip truly special.

Change your tactics. Focus on creativity instead of spending as you plan your vacation, and you’ll soon master the art of affordable travels.
