Rebate Redemption Tips
Rebating is a great way to save money, but only if you learn how to play
by the rules. Here are several tips to ensure that you receive your
rebate check:
Shop carefully
Rebates are often very specific about the item or
items that are eligible for the offer. Spend a little time in the store
making sure that the product/s you’re buying match the terms of the
rebate both by product name and size. The last thing you want is to find
that your rebate has been rejected simply because you selected the wrong
size bottle!
Watch those dates
If you’re serious about receiving your rebate
check you need to be sure to get your rebate in the mail on time. Almost
all companies will reject your rebate if it’s not post dated and
received within the time frame specified in the offer. To make sure your
rebates go in the mail on time, get in the habit of sending them in as
soon as you’ve purchased the necessary products. Rebates are not
designed for procrastinators.
Double check the details
The terms of a rebate are often very
complicated, and must be followed exactly—otherwise your request will be
denied. Make sure you don’t fall into this trap by adhering to every
stipulation of the offer. Buy the right products, circle the items on
the receipt, cut out the required UPCs and print when it says print.
Note: Recently many companies have begun to specify that all rebates be
hand addressed. If you’re serious about receiving your check, skip the
address labels. They’re sure to get you a rejection.
Write clearly
Rebates are often processed by a third party
company, and finding reasons to void your rebate is just part of their
game. Make it hard for your rebate claim to be rejected by printing all
of your information clearly; and within the specified areas.
Make copies
You’ve been waiting by the mailbox every day for
your rebate check, and it still hasn’t come—what should you do? First,
refer to the rebate offer to see if it specifies how long it should take
for your rebate to be processed. Then, if this time has been exceeded,
it’s time to contact the company. To do so, you’ll need proof that you
sent your rebate and adhered to all of the offer guidelines. Copies of
your completed rebate make this easy to prove.
Get in the habit of photocopying every rebate that you send—the
completed form, receipts, UPCs and even the stamped, addressed envelope.
Then, you’ve got all of the information that you need to pursue your
claim, and get the money that’s owed to you.
Rebates are the perfect way to save money, if you know how to play the
game. Read those directions carefully, and your check will soon be on
its way.
