Wal-Mart to Close Fabric Departments
A press release issued last week confirms rumors that
Wal-Mart plans to
close down the fabric department in some of its stores in an effort to
shift their focus to craft and party supplies.
Most new Wal-Mart stores will also open minus a fabric department.
Wal-Mart media spokesperson Marisa Bluestone, declined to offer a list
of the stores to be affected by this change.
Celebration Centers
The new “Celebration Centers” opening in place of the fabric department
will consist of craft and party supplies divided by party
theme—birthdays, weddings, holidays, etc—and will feature information on
celebration trends alongside the products offerings.
These newly configured departments will still carry some sewing notions,
such as thread, needles and machines, but will not offer any cut fabric.
The Phase Out
Rumors circulating around the web suggest that fabric department
closings in underachieving stores could come as soon as Jan. 31, 2007,
with additional fabric closings coming over the next three years.
Regardless of the date, it is evident that changes are in store for
Wal-Mart’s craft shoppers.
