The Very Quiet Cricket
by Eric Carle

This time Eric Carle has used his talent for bringing animal worlds to life by taking a subject as mundane as bugs and transforming it into something mystically beautiful.

The soft, mesmerizing artwork transports the reader right into the plight of the story's hero, the cricket.  A little cricket wants to chirp hello to the passing bugs but can't no matter how hard he tries.  He meets a cicada, a locust and many other beautiful creatures that have no problem saying hello to him.  Finally he meets another cricket and this time...

Children are pulled right into this story with its repetitive text which has them chanting along before page three.  As the final page turns little breaths are bated as they await the beautiful chirping noise that the book sends forth.
