When the weather turns out great for a week no matter how early it
is, people always want to get out and start digging in their soil and garden.
But it’s not always a good thing.
Some gardeners keep journals. Kids can keep journals too even if they cannot
write yet. Here’s a few tips on how to get kids to keep a journal.
Gardening is a hands on experience for most kids. But reading
and learning about the garden doesn’t end with that experience.
Knowing some garden terms is also important.
There is no specific cut way to harvest. Each plant, each flower
has a certain way that it can be harvested. Sometimes many
harvests can be had such as with lettuce. Here are some common
ideas for harvesting.
Every morning I go to check on the garden. I
finish the watering early in the morning when the cool still
permeates the air. Sometime in early afternoon, before the sun gets
too high overhead, I go to weeding the garden.
There are days that kids just do not want to be out there, hands
dirty and noses poked to the soil. But the kids want your attention.
Kids want to see things grow quick. We uncovered our strawberries and
my youngest daughter yelled at the strawberries to grow and grow quick!
I could only laugh. She wasn’t as happy when I explained that the
strawberries wouldn’t grow fruit until after they grew blossoms in May.
Then, she went off to other adventures outside.
Gardens grow. Then they die. But they spring up again with cultivation and care.
Some garden plants need replanting. Some gardens need more maintenance than
others.
